ABSTRACT
Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry (apprehensive expectation) occurring more days than not for at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities (such as work or school performance).1 The clinical features of Generalized Anxiety Disorder align closely with Chittodvega, a Manovikara mentioned by Acharya Charaka2. Long term use of conventional anxiolytics have adverse side effects including psychological dependence impacting the quality of life. This is a case of 17 years old patient complaining of excessive worry, restlessness, difficulty falling asleep. Based on clinical featured he was diagnosed as a case of generalized anxiety disorder according to DSM-5 criteria. Ayurvedic intervention framework consisted of Nasya with Madhuyashti Ghrita, Shiroabhyanga with Chandanbalalakshadi Tailam, Ashwagandha Churna and Drakshadi Kashyam as oral medicines.
Assessment of the condition of the patient before and after the treatment was done using
Hamilton’s anxiety rating scale to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Following the completion of the 21-day treatment at IPD level, a marked reduction in the score from 21 to 12 on Hamilton’s Anxiety Rating scale and significant symptomatic relief was observed.
